Thank somebody for something.

Murphy could instantly tell her ex-husband didn’t like the idea. He had a look on his face she knew meant he thought there was a serious flaw in something. He got the same look every election year when he worked out the Mayor’s campaign strategy. In the face of that, she did what she always did: bargained.

“You know how she gets around strangers. Lisa’s whole family will scare her.” She moved closer to him, lowering her voice so her daughter and his fiancé wouldn’t hear them. “I can be someone familiar, make her more comfortable.”

“If you come, she’ll do nothing but cling to your leg the whole evening.”

“She’ll do the same to you if I don’t.”

They both went silent for a moment. The problem with trying to make a deal with Neal was that she really had nothing to bargain with. If she made him angry, she had no leverage to force her way past his hesitance. She had to play his game.

“She’s ten, Connie,” he said, stressing their daughter’s age. “She needs to come out of her shell sometime and we can’t hold her hand through it.”

“So your idea of helping her is throwing her in with a bunch of strangers?”
